"She said yes," a rather dazed looking James told his three friends as he stumbled through the portrait hole.

"Are you serious?" Remus asked, sceptical.

"No, I'm Sirius," the dark haired teen grinned. Remus rolled his eyes, Peter sniggered, but James didn't seem to have registered the words. Annoyed at the lack of response, Sirius strode from his spot by the fire and smacked James across the back of his head.

"Snap out of it Prongs."

James straightened his glasses, the blow had knocked them down his nose, and looked at his friends, a dopey smile on his face.

"Evans finally agreed to go out with me."

"Are you sure she's not under the Imperius curse?" Sirius asked in a very serious tone.

"Shut up, Padfoot," Remus shut the book he had been reading with a soft 'snap'. Sirius pouted at him. "What happened, James?""

"Well, McGonagall called us about our Head boy and girl duties, and as we were leaving I asked her out-"

"As always," Sirius cut in.

"-and she said yes. She's going to Hogsmeade with me next weekend,"James continued, completely ignoring Sirius. His dazed look suddenly became smug. "Of course, I knew it was only a matter of time."

"Yeah right," Peter snorted. "I bet you nearly wet yourself with shocked excitement."

Sirius tugged at James' robes.

"Your trousers do look a bit damp.."

James slapped him away. They began to wrestle, and within moments were on the ground. Remus sighed as Peter scrambled to his knees, leaning over the back of the armchair to watch.

"Say it," growled Sirius ten minutes later. His knee was settled in the centre of James' back, one hand pinning down both of the latter's arms, the other pointing his wand where James' neck met skull.

"Never," James gasped against the carpet. Sirius sent a few sparks from his wand, singeing the ends of James' hair.

"Okay, okay. Padfoot is king," James wheezed breathlessly.

"Louder, please," Sirius requested with mock politeness. "I don't think Moony or Wormtail quite caught that."

"Padfoot is king!" James repeated, louder. Satisfied, Sirius rolled off of him, and a jet of red light immediately flew past his face. He narrowly avoided it. Behind him, the leg of the table shattered.

Sirius was halfway through casting his own hex in return when his wand soared out of his hand. He turned to see Remus catch both his and James' wands, looking unimpressed.

"Really, your childish behaviour is going to destroy the common room." With an exclamation of 'tsk', he turned to the table and flicked his wand. 'Reparo." The table leg reconnected itself.

"Way to be a killjoy, Moony."

Remus looked at Sirius for a moment, eyebrow quirked. Then he threw James back his wand and settled down again with his book.

"Hey, no fair," Sirius squawked. He made to dive behind the sofa, but was too slow. With a wave of James' wand and a flash of light Sirius was flung into the air. Suspended by his ankle, he glared daggers at his laughing friends.

"Let me down."

"You look a bit like Snivellus from that angle," snorted James. Sirius clenched and unclenched his wand hand, looking indignant.

"Put me down now Prongs, before I-"

"Okay," James cut him off, and with another flash of light Sirius dropped from the air. He hit the back of the sofa rather painfully and rolled down, landing with his head in Remus' lap.

"Hey," he smirked up, slyly snatching his wand back. As he went to raise it, Remus put his hand on Sirius' wrist.

"Don't," he said softly. Sirius lowered his wand.

"You're lucky Moony's here to save you," he told a grinning James.

"Lucky you're whipped, you mean."

"Says the man who licks the ground where Evans steps."

"Ah yes, we were on the subject of Evans!" James immediately shot into a detailed speech of why he always knew Lily would eventually fall for him. Just as he was midway through listing his best qualities, Sirius hit him with a silencing charm, then immediately disarmed him. With his mouth gaping but making no sound, James quite resembled a startled fish.

"Much better," commented Remus, absent mindedly petting Sirius' hair. Peter giggled, sinking down into his plushy armchair.

James had just pounced onto Sirius when the portrait hole opened. Lily entered, clutching an armful of books. The common room was mostly empty, occupied only by the Marauders and a group of quiet third years who had learned it was better to keep out of the way. Her eyes were immediately drawn to the scene by the fire.

James had frozen, arm outstretched in an effort to grab his wand, straddling Sirius' hips. Sirius had attempted to crawl backwards from the attack, and consequently was half in Remus' lap, who was holding his book high out of harms way. Peter was watching, a look of glee shining on his round face.

They all turned to face Lily, who had paused at the foot of her dormitory stairs. James waved, a goofy grin plastered on his face. Lily hesitated before deciding it best she ignore the whole ordeal and darting up the stairs.

"I see how you really wooed her there Prongs." Remus hid his smile at Sirius' comment behind his book.

James shot Sirius the darkest look he could muster, before diving once more for his wand.
This was originally the introduction to my James/Lily story I'm writing for ~Yaten-Kous-Girl's HP competition, but I think it works well as a standalone.

Can be read as the prequel to 'Be The Headlights To My Deer', which can be found here: [link]

My first Marauder fic! I'm not sure I got their personalities spot on, but I trieddd. I always imnagined James and Sirius would be the kind of besties that would continuosly have childish fights, and Remus would simply roll his eyes at their boyish behavious, while Peter got excited and watched.
